SIP Trunking FAQs
SIP trunking connects your phone system (PBX) to the public phone network using an IP connection instead of traditional phone lines. It provides "channels" (concurrent call paths) that can scale up or down as your needs change.
PRI and analog services are fixed-capacity, legacy circuits. SIP trunking is delivered over IP, which makes it easier to scale, share capacity across locations, and modernize calling while reducing reliance on traditional copper-based services.
A channel is one concurrent call. The right number depends on your busiest calling periods (not your total number of phones). A common approach is to size for peak usage, then adjust as your business changes. We can help estimate the right capacity.
Yes. We can port (transfer) your existing phone numbers (DIDs) so you can move to Sunwire without changing the numbers your customers already know. Porting timelines can vary by carrier, but we'll guide you through the process end-to-end.
Typically you'll need a SIP-capable phone system (PBX), the right network configuration, and a stable internet or dedicated IP connection. In some environments, an SBC (Session Border Controller) is recommended for security and interoperability. We can confirm compatibility and handle setup.
Call quality depends on bandwidth, latency, jitter, and network configuration. We'll help ensure your connection and environment are properly sized, and we can recommend QoS (Quality of Service) settings and business-grade connectivity options for consistent voice performance.
If the connection carrying SIP service is unavailable, calls may be impacted. Many businesses add redundancy (secondary connectivity) and call-forwarding failover so inbound calls can automatically route to another number or location. We can help build the right failover plan.
V911 is a VoIP-based emergency calling service and may have important limitations compared to traditional landlines. It's important to keep address information current and understand how calls route during power or network outages. Refer to Sunwire's Terms and Conditions for details.
